Remote Control of a modern, automated home can be achieved in a number of ways depending on the control system or control functions which are installed.

WebBrick Home Remote Control Systems

WebBrick Systems is a favourite of self builders and those home owners wanting detailed knowledge and control of all things related to heating and energy control in the home. Since this system is IP based it is highly adapted to remote control using the internet.  New systems from this manufacturer are no longer available, unfortunately but the same principles have been followed by Loxone below.

Loxone Home Automation

Loxone is an exciting new control system which has been conceived in the IP age and provides all the facilities for networked access and remote access over the internet.

Loxone has inbuilt software for managing heating and lighting and does a superb job of delivering the information you need to successfully manage your home. Loxone is a very cost-effective way of managing your home because the interfaces are all built into the software by the designers and there is very little cost overhead in developing a new application interface.

Control4 Home Automation Systems

Control4 is a completely integrated Home Automation system combining music and video distribution, Home Cinema control and lighting and heating control. There are also interfaces to alarm systems and cctv camera systems.

Control4 has its own remote access system called 4Sight which allows access over the internet to check on the status of security systems, see cctv camera images and adjust the state of controlled equipment. See www.control4.com/4sight for more information.

Remote Control Security Cameras

Many cctv systems come with DVRs to record the images produced during a recordable incident. The DVRs also generally come with a network server to enable live images and recorded material to be displayed using a web browser. In this way, live images and recorded images can be seen from remote locations over the internet. Some of these systems are difficult to set up, however, and some care is required to persuade them to work in all circumstances.

Remote Control Alarm Systems

Many alarm systems are equipped with fixed phone line connections to provide a pre-recorded message when an incident occurs. Some systems can also have GSM modules which will provide text messages detailing the exact nature of any incident. These GSM interfaces can work both ways with a mobile phone being able to change the status of an alarm system by sending a text message and even controlling electrical equipment using text messages.

Stand-Alone Mini Remote Control Systems

Also available are GSM based modules which can control individual electrical equipment when they receive a text message and which will also send a text message when a contact closes signalling some incident has occurred. These are ideal for adding basic home remote control systems, or monitoring critical equipment.
